Statement
I try to fuse together personal / individual identities with diverse cultural
and historical references. It is more often religious imagery that I find
the most beguiling and enduring influence. Recent trips to Beijing, Venice
and Crete have offered unique means of seeing profound artworks in their
natural context alongside my own travel experiences.
Since returning to figurative imagery I have been seeking new painting
processes that can best convey the ambivalent states of being that I’m
trying to harness. My most recent use of mirrors and metal plates (previously
used in etching) as surfaces have provided an ideal vehicle for how I
wish to use paint. Their properties and those of paint conspire together
to determine images and have enriched my experience of the painted ‘skin’
and the wiped away ‘smear’.
